Representation of Regional Identity

In the beginning shot that tracks out and left to show the two local men and Doc Martin, it shows the local men in dirty work jumpsuits and Doc Martin in a suit. This is representational of their regional identities as Doc Martin is from a more upper class region and these men are from a more working class region. This is a stereotypical look on them. Later on in the clip when Doc Martin is walking with an older woman, the way she is dressed instantly tells us she is from a region similar to Doc Martain. Because Doc Martin is likened more towards this person than the plumbers, we could say this reflects how people from certain regions are nicer to those from similar regions, which is a stereotypical view. Also, the tow characters in this scene are standing at the same height and side-by-side. However, back in the scene with the plumbers, Doc Martin is standing while the plumbers are crouched/sitting. This suggests that those from higher class regional backgrounds have more power over those from more working class regions.

Representation or Sexuality

In the very first three shots of the video, both of the women are kept in the medium and medium close-up shots. This connotes the women are very close to one another, which may represent how homosexual people are very close to each other when they are in a relationship. This is a stereotypical view. The way the characters interact in this shot also shows how close they are, such as the behind woman rubbing the in front woman's shoulders and the non-diegetic dialogue "She looked so beautiful" being the thoughts of one of the women.

The scene with the woman being confronted by the man by the tree represents non-homosexuals as superior over homosexuals. The man says He'll "Tell her" to the woman which makes the woman fearful, representing homosexuality as easy to take advantage of. This can be stereotypical of discrimination in the real world, as homosexuality is often discriminated against.

Representation of gender: Dr. Who

When we see the doctor in the cage it is presented in a high angle shot. This connotes the doctor is weak. The idea of weakness is also portrayed in the CGI effect use to make the very old, alien looking doctor. His pose is very frail and makes him seem weak and vulnerable. This vulnerability goes against the set stereotype of males being strong characters, but since the one who trapped him is male it also backs it up. The high angle shot is also used throughout the first half of the clip when the villain is addressing the woman. This is used to show the villain has power and the woman does not in this situation, conforming with the common stereotype. Once the power begins to shift from the villain towards the woman as she unveils her plan to the villain, the editing changes to short, equal shots of both the man and woman. This equal screen-time connotes that both the man and woman are equal in this scene. The non-diegetic music also picks up at this point and helps with the idea of shifting power. As the woman speaks the music gets more intense. This may connote that the woman has power because it's as if she is controlling the music, even though it is non-diegetic.

Researching shot types

To research different shot types, my group created a montage of as many different shot types as we could in a set time.

Hotel Babylon and Ethnicity

  • The ethnicities are easily distinguishable because of the way they are separate to each other, like in the last scene of the video when they are eating.
  • This scene also helps us tell that the different ethnic backgrounds have different interests, personalities, attitudes and behaviours. The fist two groups we see are being loud, talking in their own language etc. and then the camera pans to two black people who are sitting quietly and praying.
  • Their ethnicity is shown as important in the way it disrupts their job and the way they stick together.
  • The white british people are shown as the more powerful people in this clip, the police officers and the man from the immigration agency are white and they take away a black man by force.
  • The other characters try to help the characters in danger by warning them that the immigration officer is in the building.
  • This clip shows that the dominating ethnicity in a country has more power than those from other ethnic backgrounds. some use that power to help and some use it to control with authority.

Key words for Camera Work and Representation

Rule of thirds:
When the image is split up into a 3x3 grid. The focus on the image should be on the divide of the centre square and the one next to it.

Depth of field:
The depth of field is the distance between the nearest and furthest objects in a scene.
